Heidy Huwiler

I am a freelance musician, clarinet teacher and co-founder of MusiKenya.

As a clarinetist, I studied in Zurich and Lucerne and attended various master classes with Philippe Cupper, Alessandro Carbonare, Martin Fröst and Sharon Kam, among others, as well as klezmer workshops in Israel and Germany.

I regularly perform in orchestras and chamber music groups (City Light Orchestra, Aargauer Bläsersolisten, Kammerphilharmonie Berner Oberland) with clarinet as well as basset horn and contrabass clarinet including various instruments such as bass- and E-flat and have also appeared as a soloist.
Since 2009, I have performed in a duo with pianist Andrea Isch (www.duo-voltage.ch). We recorded the CD ‘rhapsodic’ in 2018, with works by Marc Eychenne, York Bowen and George Gershwin, which has since received attention on Swiss radio channel SRF2 Kultur.

With the Swiss-German klezmer formation ‘Freilach Trio’, which came together during a workshop by Giora Feidman, I explore traditional klezmer music and expand it with improvisation and compositions. In the fall of 2020, the band released its first CD, which contains exclusively original compositions and is available on all major streaming services.
To round out my diverse interests, I studied philosophy for a several semesters at the University of Lucerne. In 2019, I followed up with a CAS in Music, Création and Scenario with Charlotte Hug and was in Cohort 2021 of ‘The Global Leaders Program’, a one-year ‘Art-Entrepreneur’ study program. As a result, MusiKenya was born, a program that offers a one-month training to musicians and music teachers in Kenya to earn an income from their profession while providing a better musical education for young music students.

Heidy Huwiler plays instruments made by Schwenk & Seggelke, master workshops for innovative clarinet making, in Bamberg.
